Fish and Trucks Don't Mix

A mega 77-acre Truck Parking Facility is proposed for environmentally sensitive land within in the Campbell Valley Watershed. The facility would include parking, semi-truck washing, warehousing and mechanical and repair bays.

The construction of such a facility would be potentially disastrous for several reasons:

1. Water Quality Concerns: The land in question recharges the Brookswood Aquifer which supplies wells throughout South Surrey area as well as supplying most of the water for the Brookswood and Fernridge areas of Langley.  According to the City of Surrey’s Madrone Study, this aquifer is “highly vulnerable to contamination from surface sources.”

2. Fish and Wildlife Concerns: The proposed truck property serves as a critical wildlife corridor between two of the last remaining large stands of forest in Surrey. This area is home to at least 13 species at risk as well as some of the richest spawning beds for salmon in the whole Little Campbell River, the most productive salmon river of its size in the Lower Mainland.

3. Social Concerns: Three residential care facilities operate directly across 16th Avenue from the proposed truck facility, which raises concern over traffic safety, increased air pollution and security issues for these vulnerable populations. In addition, Semiahmoo First Nation at the mouth of the Little Campbell River rely on healthy salmon populations for their food security.

In consideration of the environmental, human health and social impacts inherent in the proposed Truck Parking Facility, we ask the Surrey City Council to reject rezoning from Agricultural to Industrial for Development Proposal #7915-0277-00, OCP.
