Protect the sea turtles - Stop sand mining at Braamspunt, Suriname
Why this petition matters
Braamspunt is an important beach used by sea turtles for nesting.
Minister Dodson of the Ministry of Natural Resources has given permission to mine sand at Braamspunt, despite the Reports and advice of WWF Guianas and Other experts NOT to do so. This will have an impact on the eggs that have already been laid, but it will also certainly have an impact on the entire nesting season.
Braamspunt is one of the last nesting beaches in the world.
By mining the sand of the beach, the nests will be lost and these Sea turtles will become extinct!
Consequences and dangers of mining sand at Braamspunt :
Two sea turtles, the Leatherback (vulnerable) and Green Turtle (endangered) lay their eggs at Braamspunt.
These endangered species are Keystone Species. The Green sea turtles or "Krape", one of the few large species of herbivores that eat seagrass, help to maintain healthy seagrass beds.
All parts of an ecosystem are important, if you lose one, the rest will eventually follow.
In addition, these beaches fulfil an important role for sustainable sea turtle tourism on which many families and small businesses depend.
Let's Protect these nesting beaches because they are of ecological value and of economic value to a large set of stakeholders.
Let's protect these nesting beaches because it is the right thing to do, because the Sea turtles have no voice, and we are voicing our opposition against the sand-mining on their behalf.
With this petition we want to ask the government to immediately put a stop to the sand mining at Braamspunt
