Sexual harassment has become a prevalent, yet under-reported issue in Singapore today. In a survey by AWARE, 1 in 3 young people have faced some sort of sexual harassment in their lifetime — which is alarming, as most victims of sexual harassment are afraid to speak up and feel ashamed to seek help in overcoming their trauma. Given the widespread use of social media in our society and the recent initiation of the #metoo campaign, which renders support to victims of sexual abuse, we aim to focus on image-based online sexual harassment. We wish to shed light on the helplessness and emotional trauma that victims of sexual harassment undergo from a firsthand perspective, in hopes that by raising awareness of these detrimental effects on victims amongst netizens and teenagers, the authorities may consider legal actions to curb and aid this problem.
