As we all know BSP chief Mayawati’s term as Uttar Pradesh chief minister saw “hundreds of crores” of public funds spent on statues of herself and BSP’s party symbol, the elephant.

The Mayawati government during its term allocated money from the state budget for 2008-09 and 2009-10 for the projects and it is alleged that money to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore was spent. The PIL seeks direction to restrain the state government from misusing public funds for political gains. The petitioner alleged that 90% of the budget of the UP cultural department was used for the installation of statues of Mayawati, Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram and elephants.

Sixty elephant statues were installed in a park at a cost of Rs 52.20 crore each and it is not only wastage of public money but also contrary to circulars issued by the Election Commission,” petitioner Ravi Kant said in his PIL. As soon as SC agreed to hear the petetion The Mayawati government had given an undertaking in 2009 that there would be no further construction activities at the memorials.

On 08th Feb 2019, A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna, while hearing a 2009 PIL filed against the state government and Mayawati, observed that: “Madam Mayawati, reimburse to the exchequer public money you spent on the elephants. We are of the tentative view that you should pay the public money from your pocket.” Recommended By Colombia The bench said it will adjudicate the issue and posted the case to April 2 for final hearing.

On 02nd April 2019, BSP chief Mayawati filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court  justifying the expenses, in her affidavit she stated, "It was the will of the people."  The elephant is the symbol of Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Recommended By Colombia (SC Bench) Mayawati filed this affidavit in compliance with the last order of the Supreme Court on 08th Feb 2019, which had said prima facie it appeared she needed to pay back the money as she had spent a lot of public funds on the installation of these statues. Mayawati also sought the dismissal of a plea, which alleged that pubic funds were misused in the construction of memorials and statues, saying it is politically motivated and a gross abuse of process of court of law.

Her use of words "Will Of the people" in her affidavit, Myself hailing coming from Dalit Community in Uttar Pradesh find it highly offensive & Unjustifiable as she was elected by people for betterment of lives of people and providing them with basic amenities, which didn't happen as notably my village in Jaunpur District of uttar pradesh remained unelectrified as late as year 2015, toilets & Gas connections came to our village as late as 2017 also i saw roof on the school of my village as late as 2017, in short the Will of the people is to develop with better infrastructure, schools and getting basic amenities, I Strongly believe the will of the people is that the money spent should be recovered from her and spent on the above mentioned causes.

If you think so please support this cause and spread the word so that Supreme Court of India while taking a decision knows what is really is the will of the people.
