Supporting the Food Deserts Act of 2017

About 23.5 million people in the United States live in food deserts, with most being found in low income communities. Food deserts are areas where supermarkets or grocery stores that sell healthy foods aren’t at the community’s disposal. Food deserts are a very prevalent problem in America, and unjustly affects low income people of color. The Food Desert Act of 2017 is a bill that establishes a government program that provides grants for states to uphold and introduce grocery stores with affordable and nutritious foods in underserved communities. It also plans to support businesses that hire individuals within the community, as well as obtain food from local farms. This bill was introduced on June 29th, 2017, and has yet to be voted upon in Congress. This petition will help by showing our California House and Senate that this act is extremely important for many people in the US, and that it should be pushed forward in Congress. By signing this petition, you will be supporting many communities that do not have the privilege of having nutritious food at a reasonable area, and the millions that are being affected negatively because of it.
