In short, Nelson Hoops Association is looking for community support to improve outdoor basketball facilities, in particular the basketball amenities within the tennis court space at Lakeside Park in Nelson, BC.

Although there are definitely more important problems to solve at this time, I'd like to start the conversation by saying that the basketball community in Nelson has been dreaming of a suitable outdoor basketball court for decades: regulation (10 ft) hoops and flat court surface in a central location; the same amenities any other sport group would appreciate to play the game they love.

Although the basketball community is grateful for the City's initiative in recent years, installing two regulation basketball hoops within the tennis court area at Lakeside Park, the basketball court surface has the following deficiencies:

  1. The basketball hoops are centered far too close to the north fence-line, effectively curtailing available playing surface;
  2. The basketball court is situated entirely within the north tennis court and is obstructed by the tennis court's net and supports; and
  3. The basketball hoops are situated too far apart to consider playing a full-court game.

The implications of these deficient criteria for a regulation full- or half-court basketball amenity include:

  1. Obstructed, non-regulation court-spaces mean less players are able to participate at any given time;
  2. The courts are not suitable for use by local club programs such as Nelson Hoops Association, Kootenay Chill Basketball Club, or the Nelson Men's Basketball League, to host practices, games, or events, and thus are not viable for rental which the City offers;
  3. Greater risk of injury due to proximity of the fence-lines.

But this is the rule and not the exception for basketball court facilities within City limits and on school properties. There are ZERO outdoor basketball courts with both regulation hoops AND an adequate playing surface within Nelson city limits:

  • Lion's Park - playing surface is small, dangerously short beneath hoops that are not regulation heights (<10 ft);
  • Hume School - small, sloped playing surfaces, on school grounds, near busy highway, non-regulation hoop heights (>/<10 ft) often in disrepair, rims presently removed;
  • LV Rogers School - narrow court surface, court length too long, on school property, hoops non-regulation heights (>10 ft), rims presently removed;
  • South Nelson - limited court surface, on school grounds, non-regulation hoop heights (</>10 ft);
  • St. Joseph School - non-regulation (<10 ft) hoop heights, fenced and gated school grounds are inaccessible to public;
  • School District Building / Wildflower School - sloped playing surface, no court lines, hoops are portable and in disrepair with no permanent hoop installations anymore;
  • Rosemont Elementary School - small, sloped playing surfaces, on school grounds, non-regulation hoop heights (<10 ft) often in disrepair, rims presently removed; and
  • Trafalgar Middle School - on school grounds, non-regulation hoop heights (>/<10 ft).

All indoor basketball facilities within Nelson are operated within schools and have been inaccessible due to pandemic/public health measures with many schools having gone as far as taking down rims on outdoor courts at this time. Nelson Hoops Association believes that it is important that attention to outdoor public basketball facilities be a priority at this time in order to plan for the upcoming outdoor recreating season and in anticipation of less stringent public health orders, as there is great uncertainty regarding how and when safe access to indoor facilities will be granted.

Nelson Hoops Association is hoping to garner a show of community support and consult with user groups prior to present City officials with proposed improvement options to existing outdoor basketball facilities for users. Feedback is much appreciated:
