Recently, A petition has been gaining traction at Holy Cross for President Vincent Rougeau to "reconsider" our spring health and safety guidelines. Despite the guidelines being fairly lenient, members of our community seemed to be quite upset about the restrictions. COVID-19 has caused massive devastation in Massachusetts and in the country. Right now, cases are surging due to the highly transmissible omicron variant and hospitalizations are rising at an alarming rate. Despite the variant being "milder" deaths are also increasing among high risk and unvaccinated individuals and hospitals are running out of room. Despite this situation, many people feel that wearing an effective mask and taking classes online for 1 week is infringing on their personal liberties. Therefore, I think it is appropriate for these students to see the consequences of their actions. I ask President Rougeau to assign a mandatory CBL every Friday night for these students to work in an intensive care unit or a designated COVID ward. Since hospitals are short-staffed due to the alarming amount of health care workers getting sick, I think this would be a great solution to ease the pressure on Worcester hospitals. Obviously, our students do not have medical training to support COVID-positive patients so I believe that simply shadowing our heroes working on the frontline will be effective enough for these students to see the consequences of their recklessness. Maybe then some students will stop listening to Alex Jones and Joe Rogan and focus on qualified scientists and develop a greater respect for frontline nurses and doctors. I urge you to sign if you share this belief. Thank you for reading and thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and scientists trying to combat this virus.
