Barrack Obama voted “present” 129 times while in the Illinois State Senate. Many of these “Present” votes were on controversial issues such as abortion rights. In 2012 many of us who voted for President Obama in 2008 will have a controversial issue on our hands. We will have to choose between a Republican who will likely further damage our nation or President Obama who has shown a grave inability to lead, who has done little to create American jobs or reduce the number of foreclosures, who expanded the war in Afghanistan and refused to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, who signed a healthcare law that lacked a public option, who failed to enact significant legislation on climate change, who extended the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans, and who has shown a willingness to make cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
While in office President Obama has demonstrated a grave inability to lead our nation towards a brighter future. We must send a message to future candidates that if they want our support and votes they must stand up for our progressive values and improve the lives of all Americans. A large number of "Present" votes in 2012 will demonstrate our strength and unwillingness to compromise on our values. Until we are willing to allow Democrats to lose elections if they do not stand up for our ideals we will continue to elect leaders who govern in the unacceptable manner Barack Obama has governed while in office.
