There's no doubt that film has always carried a certain level of impact in society. Art has often times imitated life, and vice versa. Sadly, there has also been a huge disparity when it comes to fair representation of minorities in film. That, however, does not seem to be the case in the upcoming film Marvel's Black Panther.
Black Panther is a fictional comic book character that is the ruler of a fictional African country called, Wakanda. What makes Black Panther so unique is that he is the rule of an African kingdom that has never been colonized or conquered. Furthermore, Wakanda is the most technologically advanced country in the world.
This film carries an even deeper sense of significance beyond just pure entertainment. Black Panther is the physical manifestation of the dreams of black people all over the world. Our societies have been so heavily embedded with the ugly history of racism and colonialism that it's literally just a figment of our collective imagination to think of what the world would look like had slavery never existed.
Thus, I propose that in celebration of the upcoming movie Black Panther, February 16th, 2018 should be a national holiday. I think it would be only fair, especially during Black History month, that black people (and anyone who supports the cause of racial equality) should have a day off to enjoy the film Black Panther.
Please sign and share this petition if you agree with:
1) Fair representation in film.
2) Racial equality.
3) Having a day off to contribute to a post racial society and unity.
