Support the UN Convention on the rights of older people

Older South Africans and older people around the world continue to be discriminated against and denied their rights. A single instrument, a new international convention on the rights of older people, is the most effective way to make sure that people of all ages enjoy their human rights in older age, and on an equal basis with others.

We acknowledge the positive support for the Convention from the South African government to date and its contributions on suggested content of the Convention that have already been made at the UN Open Ended Working Group (OEWG).

However, member States fail to reach consensus around the need for an international framework, thereby delaying the Open Ended Working Group’s mandate to draft a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.

In March 2016, the Africa Union Heads of State adopted the "Protocol on Human and People's Rights on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa" which forms the basis for AU Member States to stand united in support of the UN Convention.

We, the undersigned call upon AU Member States, UN Member States and people around the globe to support the UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.

Please sign the petition to support the UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.
