  •  According to Climate Change Performance Index 90% of global Greenhouse Gas Emissions come from 60 countries
  • Ireland is number 46 of these 60 countries
  • At the moment Ireland has climate policy but is not taking enough action to achieve these policies

How can peatlands help with this??

  •  Peatlands cover only 3% of the Earth’s surface but hold the equivalent of half the carbon that is in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide!
  • Therefore peatlands have an amazing ability to store carbon, if conserved but also to emit carbon, if harvested
  • In 2021 the Irish government announced that all peat extraction would cease on state lands
  • This creates the opportunity to form a new national park in the midlands, to protect and conserve Irish peatlands.
  • This would promote the conservation of carbon sinks and important biodiversity and celebrate Ireland’s peatland heritage
