Oranga Tamariki is the government department in New Zealand which is responsible for the well-being of children and in particular, the children at risk of harm. This is the main place for any child in need to go in New Zealand and so, it needs to be set up as best as possible to support the young people in need. Currently, the support for children involved in the Oranga Tamariki system in failing drastically. The complaints system has a lot of short-comings, there is a massive recurrence of traumatic uplifts and the system itself is placing these children in need in abusive homes. The Improvement of Oranga Tamariki System Bill aims to improve these issues by establishing an independent Monitor for the system, improving the Complaints Oversight System, replacing the current Children's Comissioner with the Children and Young People's Comission and providing a review of the monitoring system every five years.
