Currently only 1 in 10 workers in the US have access to any paid family leave, which includes taking time off to care for a newborn baby or an aging parent. That means millions of us are forced to choose between caring for our families and keeping our paychecks - a choice no one should have to make.
Representative Rose DeLauro of Connecticut is gearing up to introduce a bill in Congress that would support families in both caring for loved ones and paying the bills. It's called the FAMILY Act, short for the Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act, and it would create a national paid leave program.
The FAMILY Act would allow us to receive a portion of our pay for 12 weeks if we need time away from our jobs for family or medical reasons – this would result in significant benefits for our families, businesses, and economy.
The clock is ticking. Families are being forced to make choices they shouldn't have to, and there are only a few weeks left in the congressional session to get this bill introduced.
Sign your name – and we'll deliver this message to your representative in Congress letting them know that your family, and millions of other American families, should not have to choose between work and providing care.
Americans are struggling as our nation’s policies are not adequately addressing our health and economic needs. Millions of us are juggling full-time jobs while also caring for aging parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren or loved ones with disabilities.
Don't leave caregivers alone, forced to choose between what is best for us and our families on the one hand, and the income we need on the other. Support working families by co-sponsoring the FAMILY Act today and help it get the broad political support it needs to pass.
