We the undersigned citizens of Uganda urge our Members of Parliament  and the general public to support the passing of the Legal Aid bill and to call on the Executive to pass the National Legal Aid Policy as soon as possible from the time of receiving our petition. This proposal for the law and policy has remained unprocessed at cabinet level since 2012 without any justifiable reason. The Legal Aid Law will oblige the Government of Uganda to establish a National Legal Aid Scheme that facilitates Public Defense Lawyers and Paralegals to provide free legal services to the poor, vulnerable and Marginalized and ensure protection of the right to access to justice. If the proposed bill is passed into law, it will greatly reduce on the challenges of access to justice such as poverty, ignorance, mob justice, land and property grabbing, gender-based violence, lack of legal aid lawyers and services, case backlog and delays on remand, among others.
