The Rockville Baseball Association (RBBA) has been proudly serving Montgomery County as a youth baseball organization since 1954 for kids ages 8-18. RBBA currently has over 1,200 boys and girls participating each season.
Over the past 20 years RBBA has used the baseball field at Montgomery College Rockville. In 2006 RBBA contributed $15,000 to a community based $400,000 plus fund raising effort to have lights and improvements installed on the multi-purpose field. The facility is able to accommodate collegiate soccer, general recreation, as well as a regulation collegiate baseball field and dugouts. The use and availability of this field for baseball has been a critical part of RBBA's ongoing success for middle and high school players to continue their baseball development and recreation. The Rockville area suffers from a severe lack of regulation size baseball facilities.
The MC baseball field is also used by another great Rockville based organization, Rockville Community Baseball Inc. (RCB). RCB is a volunteer 501 (C) 3 non-profit Organization which operates the Rockville Express in the nationally acclaimed Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League (www.calripkenleague.org). This provides great exposure for MC Rockville on a national platform. RCB continues the effort to create and maintain the multiuse stadium. RCB also leads numerous community based initiatives including service hour internship programs for local high school students, as well as college internship programs, through the summer collegiate baseball program. Many of the college interns are current Montgomery College Students who often matriculate to four year institutions in pursuit of bachelor degrees in sports management and other fields of study. The program has been very helpful in furthering the intern’s academic careers. Without the baseball facility, which was improved to collegiate standards as per Ripken League requirements, RCB would be forced to leave the community. The viability of the RCB programs would be greatly jeopardized and probably eliminated.
Montgomery College Rockville (MC) recently made the decision to upgrade the athletic fields. Unfortunately, despite the appeals by RBBA, RCB and other community members, it appears MC has decided to eliminate the baseball field as part of their upgrade. This is despite the fact that such multi-purpose facilities are the norm locally, regionally as well as nationally. The incremental additional cost to provide for a baseball field as part of the renovation is minimal. When the lights were installed the layout and placement were designed for a muti-use facility including soccer and baseball.
RBBA and RCB would like Montgomery College to reconsider eliminating the baseball field at the Rockville campus in order to allow RBBA, RCB and other community based organizations to continue the 20 year relationship for baseball youth in Montgomery County.
RBBA and RCB would greatly appreciate the support of parents, family and friends of RBBA and RCB, RBBA and RCB players past and present, and the Montgomery County community. Please sign this petition and share.
