The Upper Grand District School Board has initiated a boundary review affecting all families at Victory Public School.
The result will be the displacement of many children by virtue of address or age, creating ‘commuter kids’ who start their days with car or bus rides out of their neighbourhood. We fear that the result will undermine the core values shared by Victory P.S., the City of Guelph, Upper Grand District School Board (U.G.D.S.B.) and the neighbourhood as a whole - mainly that education is a community responsibility.
In 2010 we came together to keep this local school inclusive. Once again, Victory P.S. parents want to work with the board to find an equitable solution to ensure our community is not divided, and that we don’t stand by to witness the slow death of a neighbourhood school.
In a busy world, we value the importance of a local school where siblings and playmates connect in an environment sustained by a diverse group of neighbours, parents, teachers and peers. We want our children to continue to experience the benefits of both living where they learn, but also learning where they live.
Victory is local: We walk, skip and bike to school and enjoy picking up friends along the way.
Victory is inclusive: We have demonstrated commitment to a dual track school that supports both English and French-language programming.
Victory is a community: Our children benefit from drawing daily connections between the school, park, sports venues, neighbours, and local events.
We are asking the U.G.D.S.B. to consider alternatives beyond the current proposals and we need your help. Please demonstrate that you share our core values and recognize the value of Victory, in many ways the heart of this neighbourhood. Whether your children are school-aged, pre-school or grown, indeed whether you have children or not, please demonstrate that a successful community is an extension of a successful school.
What can you do? From now until November 30th!
