The Honorable Legislator Arnold Drucker has proposed legislation declaring July 16th, annually, to honor the memory of Harry Chapin within Nassau County. The undersigned citizenry and constituency offer their support and desire to see such legislation enacted as is due to the memory, accomplishments, achievements and contributions by Mr. Chapin.

Harry Chapin was not only an outstanding and globally  recognized singer/songwriter/storyteller but also a major influence in building the public awareness in the fight against world hunger, among other humanitarian efforts. Mr. Chapin founded WHY (World Hunger Year, now whyhunger.org), and was inspirational in the founding of Long Island Cares - The Harry Chapin Food Bank and the Harry Chapin Foundation.

It would be remiss to omit the fact that Mr. Chapin also posthumously received the United States Congressional Gold Medal for his philanthropic and humanitarian efforts, which have grown throughout the world and continue to to this day bringing pride and global attention to his Nassau County residency.

We respectfully urge that legislation be enacted by the Bill sponsored by The Honorable Arnold Drucker which would proclaim July 16th, annually, as "Harry Chapin Day" in Nassau County.
