Support New Athletic Fields for Lincoln HS & Hamilton MS @ Wallingford Park
The Issue
Wallingford Park has been a cherished community space for many years. This project aims to provide much needed practice fields for Lincoln HS, the largest school in the district, and create more usable outdoor space for Hamilton MS and the local community.
Project Benefits
- Increased Student Safety: Close, dedicated practice fields means fewer students crossing busy streets for early morning and evening practices.
- Save on Transportation Costs While Reducing Emissions: Lincoln has more kids playing sports than any other Seattle High School, having practice fields within walking distance lowers transportation needs and emissions.
- No Impact to Current Amenities: The existing playground, wading pool, and other park features will be maintained.
We encourage you to review the project website, where you will see concerns being raised by opponents to turfing the fields. If you still believe in getting this project done, we need you to voice your support by signing this petition. Opponents have already mobilized and gathered hundreds of signatures.
In addition to signing this petition, you can help by letting local officials hear your voice. Please the following and let them how you think increasing access to athletic fields will benefit the community:

It is a sad commentary on Seattlites that this simple act of trying to give students of Seattle's largest public school access to necessary outdoor space is being opposed. As it stands now, kids (and/or their parents) are having to pollute the environment to drive their kids to other fields hours after school closes to participate in practices. The time spent having to drive to other locations at all hours is time the kids could be putting to much better use.
We have used Wallingford Park for years with and without our kids, but think that improving the park to provide Hamilton and Lincoln students with a place for them to practice is the right thing to do. Currently the field that is there has limited use during the greater than 6 months of the year when it is too wet, muddy or dark to use.
Our family has lived a block away from the Playfield for 28 years. We've raised two kids who both went through Hamilton and one went through Lincoln. Our kids played soccer and my husband coached both of their teams through Woodland Soccer. He and their teams spent the first ten minutes of every practice cleaning up dog poop. The field has always been a muddy, dog-poopy mess and never had the proper drainage installed. As a responsible dog owner to two large dogs, I can't stand that the park's leash law is ignored every day. It's ridiculous and gross and dangerous to small children and other dogs (I can't even walk through the field with my leashed dogs as they've been attacked before). The field isn't being used to it's potential. Isn't it time to give our neighborhood schools a place to practice? I'm not thrilled about synthetic turf--I truly wish that there could be higher environmental standards in place to remedy that; but I'm all for turfing it. And if it turns out to be anything like Roosevelt's practice field, the bonus would be to finally have a track around the field to use.
