Support House Democrats' Stimulus for Schools
Petition your federal congresspeople to support the House Democrats' inclusion, in its 15 Jan. 2009 $825 billion economic stimulus plan, of $100 billion in additional federal aid to states for education. The funds are carefully and intelligently earmarked to make a difference in schools nationwide, and save them from drastic cuts during this recessionary period.
On Jan. 15, 2009, House Democrats proposed an $825 billion economic stimulus plan that included $100 billion in federal aid for school districts.
The plan's education spending is carefully thought-out in its specifics, and targets precisely the areas for support that would help eliminate the achievement gap: Title 1, teacher training and retention, smaller classrooms, educational technology, better assessments for English language learners and special needs students, and longitudinal data systems to more precisely track individual student performance over time. (We hope to see more attention to creating improved assessments for all students as well.)
The stimulus plan shows the far-sighted awareness that investing in schools today will reap dividends in more productive, healthy, and well-adjusted adults tomorrow. I strongly encourage you to support the bill's education-investment vision, and help pass it into law.
