As negotiations of worker contracts commence, the students of George Mason University stand in solidarity with Sodexo workers demanding better working conditions from their employer. Employees pay in the $600 range per month for health insurance with hours frequently being cut arbitrarily. The average wage for George Mason University Sodexo dining employees is within the $11 to $13 range, despite most workers residing in Fairfax where the MIT Living Wage is calculated at $17.44. Sodexo workers voted 130 to 9 in favor of creating a union in response to the unlivable conditions listed above.

The students of George Mason University demand that the management of the on-campus dining provider, Sodexo, accept the demands listed in the petition created by workers for higher wages, better benefits, and more respectful working conditions. We also use this petition as a show of solidarity with campus workers. We will continue to support Sodexo workers through the negotiation process and expect the George Mason University administration to take any and all action within the University’s power to pressure Sodexo to address the demands of workers.
