There has been increasing intimidation and clampdown in Turkey on dissenting artists, writers, politicians, curtailing basic freedoms of speech and expression.
Turkish courts have been working overtime to throw government opponents of all political stripes behind bars.Since 2007, the government has run trials charging lawyers, politicians, academics, journalists and military officers – over 300 people - with plotting to overthrow the government. These people have been held in prison while the trials dragged on for the last five years.
Prosecutors summed up their case on March 18, 2013 in the so-called Ergenekon trial and demanded life sentences for journalist Mustafa Balbay, internationally known Professor Mehmet Haberal, retired armed forces commander Ilker Basbug, and, others who believe in a secular, democratic Turkey.
The New Yorker wrote “Turkey presented one of the worst pictures in terms of free media and freedom of speech. According to the Freedom for Journalists Platform, the government holds more 70 journalists in jail, apparently more than any other country in the world and more than China and Iran combined”.
As Turkish- Americans we demand the release of these innocent journalists, professors and scientists. We support free speech and free media in Turkey.
