Currently there are many more hormonal birth control options available to women and those with ovaries than there are non-hormonal birth control options. There are very few birth control options of any kind available to men and those with testes.

Women and those with ovaries are unduly burdened by the side effects and the labor of responsibility, planning, and purchase when it comes to contraception.

Many who suffer side effects from the hormonal birth control options they have tried are then left with very few non-hormonal options available to them that fit their needs and wants. This leaves many of us vulnerable to unplanned pregnancy.

While effectiveness of birth control is vital, side effects also play an important role in this decision making process.

This is a reproductive justice and feminist issue.

It is essential to the goals of informed choice, agency, and equality that non-hormonal birth control options for all are prioritized in research and development and supported to come to market.

Presently the non-hormonal birth control options we do have, such as the diaphragm or cervical cap, are difficult to obtain. Others, such as the copper IUD, have stayed the same for decades. For many non-hormonal options in the US there is only one brand or type available, leaving little incentive for development. A lack of education means many do not even know of the existence of Fertility Awareness Based Methods.

For men and those with testes, there are only condoms or vasectomy and it has been this way for over 60 years. Many non-hormonal options have stalled at the development phase and not received the support to continue to market, partly due to the false assumption that men are not interested in increasing their contraceptive options.

When it comes to hormonal birth control options under development, these are often halted in production by the side effects seen during research - an irony not lost on women and one that comes at a cost.

With this petition, The Business of Birth Control team and community will show support for contraception equality and the development of much needed non-hormonal birth control options for all. We demand #betterbirthcontrol.
