Why this petition matters

Started by Julie Slaughter

Florida has a wonderful school for the deaf and blind in St Augustine. It was founded in 1855. At that time Florida's population was 269,493 (1890 us census) We now have a population of 21.4 million. Yet, we still have only one School for the Deaf and Blind. This causes parents to choose between the scarce resources of county school systems or sending their children far away to be boarded. We were told that our son (9 years old) could be placed on a bus each Sunday and take a 10-hour trip to Saint Augustine and stay at the school until making a return trip each Friday. This would allow us less than 36 hours per week to parent our own child. Many states have multiple schools for children with these disabilities. As the third largest State in the Union, it's time to offer families a better solution than giving up their disabled children to the state. Parents and siblings should not be limited to facetime only relationships. I humbly ask that people begin an email campaign to move our state to create a Southwestern Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. Please support this petition and email our Governor at GovernorRon.Desantis@eog.myflorida.com
