Support Cleaning Up South End Boston Sidewalks by Providing Trash & Recycling Bins
The South End is being taken over by the excess garbage and recyclables that residents discard. The trash buildup is not only an eyesore but also houses an infestation of rodents. Community members are disgusted with the new norm of their neighborhood and are fearful that the rodents could get into their houses and spread diseases. Residents are frustrated with stepping over trash as they try to travel down the sidewalks. In a recent article, Christopher Gavin from Boston.com interviewed the residents of the South End regarding the impact that the garbage has catalyzed. One resident stated that "Leaving trash out the night before and having to store trash for a bustling downtown neighborhood has led to an increased presence of rodents" (Gavin, 2019).
A more dependable, consistent, and enforced protocol is necessary to support the South End residents' healthier and cleaner environment. The city of Boston needs to provide the residents with trash and recycle bin collection units with lids to help decrease the number of rodents and pests living amongst the garbage. These collection units will limit waste being openly thrown onto the sidewalks making the South End more aesthetically pleasing. The trash in garbage bins will also allow residents to commute on a trash-free sidewalk.
For this petition to enact a change in the Sound End community, we need the help of Brian Coughlin, the city of Boston superintendent of waste reduction. By having his involvement, we may gain more insight into the ongoing trash issue in South End, Boston (Stanhouse, 2020).
We can help ensure that every South End resident acquires the appropriate garbage/recycling units necessary to keep the sidewalks clean and rodent-free. Please help us by signing this petition.
