Support approved class size determination applications at El Camino College

The Issue

Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, 11 programs applied for class size reduction in Fall 2021, using a process agreed to by our administration. Our Division Load and the Campus Load Review Committees, made up of faculty and administrators, approved our applications because our arguments for reducing class sizes were reasonable and based on faculty workload, student learning, and safety in classrooms and labs.

Since Fall 2022, representatives from the 11 programs have been negotiating with the administration, though these negotiations should have been done in May 2022 based on the timeline agreed to by the Federation and administration. The administration’s most recent counter proposal includes only modest reductions, mainly for specialty, non-intro classes that often enroll below cap. The administration's proposal includes a trigger mechanism that would require reverting back to the old caps “if sections enroll to cap or generate waitlists two primary terms [Spring or Fall semesters] in a row.” Worse, the administration’s proposal is silent (Yes, silent!) for the introductory classes we teach the most frequently. Clearly, the administration is not taking our workload and student success concerns seriously.

We must come together to show our administration that lower class sizes are a much needed structural change to our programs and college. Please sign the petition below and show your support.
