Lawmakers in Springfield need to find a budget solution for Illinois. While they work into the summer to find common ground on reducing spending and searching for new revenue, Illinoisans have already identified a popular way to tackle the problem. According to a recent public opinion poll, 65 percent of Illinois voters support a proposal to enact a penny-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks and to use the proceeds to improve Illinoisans’ health.

Nearly two-thirds of Illinois voters understand the harmful effects of sugary drinks and are willing to pay a small tax in order to fund critical health programs like restoring Medicaid and investing in community prevention programs that aim to reduce disease and save future healthcare costs. Simply said, the voters of Illinois are willing to raise revenue through a small sugary drink tax to keep people healthy and to help care for those who are sick, many with obesity-related chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. This would be a BIG WIN for health and a HUGE LOSS for diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. These chronic diseases cost Illinoisans over $6 billion a year in unnecessary health care costs.

A penny-per-ounce sugary drink tax is expected to generate more than $600 million dollars a year and could be used for investment in communities across the state to invest in expanded opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity and restoring Medicaid.

Please ask your lawmakers and the governor to support making Illinois healthier by supporting a sugary beverage tax.
