Mike Lynch started this petition to U.S. Senate Senator Benjamin L. Cardin and

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center located in Greenbelt, MD is about to give up for sale 105-acres of forest land (also known as NASA Area 400). This forest land, adjacent to the Patuxent Research Refuge, may be purchased by developers, putting further pressure on the refuge and continuing a trend in loss of natural areas. In this time of climate change, loss of insect biomass, species extinctions, decrease in water quality, and other environmental concerns, bold action is needed in preserving our remaining forest land.

Forests create healthy and climate resilient communities. Both people and wildlife will benefit from an addition of the 105-acres of forestland to the Patuxent Research Refuge. Loss of this forest land would also contribute to forest fragmentation, reducing the continuous forest area that is needed to support a healthy forest ecosystem with freedom for wildlife to roam throughout.

Please ask that your US Representative and Senators support a no-cost transfer of NASA’s Area 400 to the adjacent Patuxent Research Refuge (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service).

If you can take the extra step, you can have even more impact by calling your Senators and Representatives.
