To move forward as a species, a lunar colony is not just wanted, it's needed. For greater missions like colonizing Mars, a lunar base would be a great launching point to send the necessary materials to the bases created. 

Although colonizing the moon seems like an insurmountable obstacle, we have the resources and the technology to make this happen. And, when you think about it, this is no bigger task than making a Mars base first. 

Even if you are not interested in going beyond our home planet, this mission would benefit you in ways you couldn't imagine. Think about technology. A barren rock floating around our planet is the perfect place to test new technology. Maybe on the moon we discover a faster way of transportation, or a safer use of energy. If we make the moon a habitable place, and colonize it, we could even unlock extraterrestrial trade. The moon has all sorts of valuable metals, such as titanium, which is sometimes used in products such as watches. The Moon also contains Lithium, a valuable material in making electric cars, batteries, and even phones

The Moon could also be a base for other projects. The Moon has no atmosphere, making it tenfold easier to leave it and saving fuel for traveling to farther planets. If we wanted to unlock the resources of the asteroid belt, a Moon base would immensely help with getting missions off a planet. 

If we win, we not only get a base on the moon, we get new technologies beyond our imagination, many resources to help make rare products and money, and much more. If we lose, however, we may never get that dream. The government may always be "too busy" NASA, focusing on Mars, oblivious to the mini-one we have in our own extraterrestrial backyard. Having a Moon base is not science-fiction. It is a real possibility, one that we can make happen today. It would create more opportunities to explore beyond our world, and improve the one we live in today.
