Reject the Dollar Tree Warehouse Proposal for Rt. 150, Schodack NY

The 1 million sq ft. warehouse proposed by Dollar Tree for Rt .150 (near Rts. 9&20) is not a good fit for Schodack NY or rural Rensselaer County. The 24/7 facility will have 165 tandem trailers loading daily, filling the air with diesel air pollution. Nearby rural homes will be adversely affected by noise, pollution, and run-off issues. More than simply the immediate area around the warehouse will be affected, since several miles along Rts. 9/20 and Rt. 9 will face traffic hazards from tandem trailers having to back-track miles towards Exit 12 (since Exit 11 cannot be used by tandem trailers), making already narrow intersections dangerously constricted, and making it hazardous for residents to turn off onto rural, residential roads. In addition, the facility, with acres of black-top, is located directly above the Town's aquifer, and adjacent to the environmentally-sensitive Moordener Kill (Creek). Dollar Tree has asked for massive tax breaks, thus generating little direct tax benefits to the residents of Schodack. Vacant warehouses dot the urban landscape in Albany, Rensselaer, and other, already industrially-zoned areas of the Capital District. We urge you to reject this proposal from Dollar Tree, and ask Dollar Tree to pursue alternate locations, thus preserving the open lands in Schodack and other rural parts of Rensselaer County for agricultural, natural, and other environmentally-sensitive business uses.
