Rural Antelope Acres’ homes, elementary school and downtown are being surrounded by industrial-scale solar development, against the will of the people. Environmental impacts and long-term effects of utility-scale solar power development are unknown. Risks include impacts to human health and safety, flooding, increased temperatures and loss of animal habitat.
We are concerned citizens of Los Angeles County, and we urge Supervisor Barger to protect human health and safety, the environment, and the rural character of Antelope Acres by enacting legislation designed to 1.) Impose a “no-build”, or “buffer” zone around our habitable dwellings and public buildings, 2.) Require comprehensive research and understanding of the environmental impacts and long-term effects of utility-scale solar power development before development continues, 3.) Impose standards to ensure compliance with conditions of Conditional Use Permits for Solar Operators at the City and County levels, and 4.) Require air quality monitoring near solar development sites, in desert regions with unusually high winds and erodible soils.
