Bethany Lock started this petition to The Government and Supermarkets

I am calling for the government to regulate restrictions in place in supermarkets now and for supermarkets to create a single parent morning so that they can shop without judgement.

It has come to my attention across my social media that many single parents are having to choose between going without their essentials or leaving their child(ren) unattended at home, at the front of or outside a store. This is because many stores are putting restrictions on children being allowed in or only a specific amount of children per family allowed to come in with you. This is causing many issues for single parents up and down the country.

As the government have put lockdown restrictions in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (rightly so) it  therefore means you cannot go to anyone else's household unless they are vulnerable and require essential care. This is resulting in many single parents having to take their children shopping who usually may be with a relative or friend or at school or nursery when their parents usually go to get there shopping.

I have read of a mother forced to leave her 4 and 6 year old at the front of the store under supervision of staff she does not know in order to get groceries. I have heard of a single dad with a young daughter who was turned away from a store for having her in tow because he had no other choice but to bring her. I have also heard of single parents receiving a barrage of abuse from other customers telling them to leave their children at home or get a delivery slot or click and collect slot. However if you have a child or children and are a single parent household this is not always possible.

Furthermore, these delivery slots and click and collect slots are now being prioritised for the most vulnerable. Trying to get a slot is like gold dust. Currently in my area there are no bookable slots at all. They may be increasing these slots however this is simply not enough.

According to gingerbread, the single parent families charity in the UK, there are 1.8 million single parent families. This accounts for a quarter of all dependent children in the UK. This is potentially 1.8 million children being out at risk of being left at home, in a car or at the front of the store whilst their parent goes shopping. This is potentially 1.8 million children and their parents going without their essentials if all supermarkets adopt this approach to no children allowed in store.

Therefore I am calling for the government to act now in regulating restrictions in supermarkets. For supermarkets nationally to check on what their stores are implementing up and down the country and to dedicate a few hours of a morning to allow single parent families to shop without judgement and get the essentials their require too.

Of course all parents in an ideal world love to keep their children at home and reduce their social contact further by not taking them shopping thus keeping them safer. However this is just simply not realistic and not everyone has someone to drop essentials at their doorstep.
