kay chilvers started this petition to Supermarkets and shops

I believe that all these self service tills in shops and supermarkets are taking away our choice.  The shops and supermarkets are discriminating against the elderly and the disabled specifically, but everyone in the long run.  I for one did not apply for a job in these places so why should I do the job of the cashiers, who will no doubt be out of a job due to this.  Maybe not quite now, but they will be in the long run.  Each time I go to a shop there are more of these self service tills.  You either use these, which entails calling someone to help on a regular basis because they dont read the bar code, or it wont read reduced items, of it has a surprise item in the bagging area! This is usually the bag that it has just asked for, or you queue for a long time because they only have 1 or 2 human cashiers open.  If you are elderly or disabled it is difficult if not painful to stand and wait in line this long, but the elderly dont want to use a machine or maybe cant, especially when the machine is guaranteed to need a real person before you can finish your shop.  You also have to move all your shopping twice, from the trolly, to the bagging area, bagging area to the bags in your trolly due to the machine telling you that the bag is a surprise item.  They are useful maybe for those in a hurry, although due to the human cashiers being closed you have to queue for the self service too, but to many people they are more trouble than they are worth just to save the shops the cost of paying wages.  IF YOU AGREE PLEASE SIGN, THERE SHOULD BE ENOUGH MANNED CHECKOUTS FOR US TO HAVE THE CHOICE NOT TO BE FORCED TO USE THESE SELF SERVICE TILLS WITHOUT A THOUGHT HOW DIFFICULT IT MAKES IT FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.
