MI Student Advocate started this petition to Superintendents, principals, athletic directors, coaches parents and KIDS

On behalf of Superintendents, principals, athletic directors, coaches and most importantly parents and KIDS across the State of Michigan, we urge MDHHS to immediately reconsider the ban on contact sports and keep your promise to kids of “following the science.”

Global Health expert Dr. Richard O. Straub has stated that the “health, psychology and overall well-being of our young people are reliant upon the complete state of physical, mental and social well-being” that we are expected and required to provide to our students as educators. The continued delay in participation for our winter sports athletes directly violates ALL three components of this reality.

We believe our reasoning is based on science and the mental health and overall well-being of our youth – we SEE and LIVE every day what eliminating sports is doing to kids.

Most importantly, these restrictions are widening the future education gap and reducing the opportunity for those relying on scholarships to attend college.  The side effects of these decisions to further delay sports are devasting to our youth and must be factored into the thought process.

The MDHHS and Governor’s office have promised from day 1 to follow the science, yet the youth are suffering the most from these failed promises.  Explaining to our state’s great young people that higher-risk individuals can go to the casino, bingo halls and exercise classes -- but that they are unable to participate in sports -- only fosters a baseless, prejudicial, illogical and dishonest conversation.

1. MDHHS data has shown that other industries have had a far greater number of outbreaks than indoor contact sports, yet are allowed to reopen.

2. Harvard Study: Kids are not significant contributors to the spread of CVOID:

3. The MDHHS’s own testing program proved that 99.6% of kids in the pilot program tested NEGATIVE.

4. Michigan has one of the lowest infection rates in the Country and it’s not from eliminating contact sports – Minnesota and North Dakota have a lower infection rate per 100K, and they are playing contact sports.

5. Gym classes with 100s of kids, NOT just 30 basketball players, are happening every day.

6. Johns Hopkins study documented that contact via sweating does NOT contribute to the spread https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/coronavirus-frequently-asked-questions

You promised to follow the science but have only accomplished the devastation of our youth on so many levels; one can only conclude that profits and politics have once again come before kids.
