The main goal for all high school students is to graduate with the requirements and skills necessary for pursuing their future careers. The students at Lowell High School want the best chance they can get at a successful future. Our goal is to get another guidance counselor at our school to help us plan our future.

The students at Lowell High School currently feel as though they are being inadequately prepared for their future college and careers and furthermore feel they are entirely uninformed about the college application process. A large portion of student stress stems from the confusion surrounding things such as college requirements, SATs, and college applications. While the school offers resources such as the “College and Careers Center” students feel this isn’t enough to help prepare and inform them on how to successfully get into the college they desire. If you were to take a handful of LHS students at random and ask if they felt they were well educated on how to apply to college or register for SATs/ACTs a majority of them would respond with no.

Lowell High school is a large and diverse community that holds many first-generation college students. With no parents or older siblings to guide them, and no school resources consistently being offered, many students struggle to meet college deadlines. Not to mention, students that struggle financially aren’t always made aware of the benefits available such as financial aid. Our school does offer clubs such as Trio and Gear up that provide students with the opportunity to take college field trips and also allows for them to apply to colleges for free. However, these opportunities aren’t always vocalized enough and students don’t find out about these advantages until its too late. Additionally, these clubs have limits on how many students can join, and often the students who could gain the most aren’t being included. Signing  this petition would help us meet our goal and help students at our school gain more confidence and knowledge when approaching their future.
