Our children need parent representation on the BHBL Response to Intervention Redesign Committee!

The purpose of a Response to Intervention (RTI) program is to provide a safety net to at risk learners. RTI is a multi-tiered approach to early identification and support of students with learning and behavioral needs.

Parents are a child’s strongest advocate! In March of 2019, BHBL parents expressed concerns regarding the BHBL RTI program and policy. In response, Superintendent Patrick McGrath created a Shared Decision-Making committee called the “RTI Redesign Committee” beginning in September of 2019. The Committee consists of 19 district employees. In October of 2019, Superintendent Patrick McGrath stated that parents would not be included as members of this Committee despite requests for direct parent representation.

BHBL has strong policies advocating for parent involvement in the educational decision-making process! Both the BHBL Shared Decision-Making policy and Parent and Family Engagement Policy call for parent representation on Committees. On November 11, 2019 the BHBL Board of Education was asked by parents to oversee BHBL’s adherence to these policies, but has chosen to stay silent.

Two other Shared Decision-Making Committees have been formed during the 2019-2020 school year, both including 2-3 parent representatives. Why should the RTI Redesign Committee be any different?

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves! Parent participation as equal partners in the educational process is essential to every student’s success! Ask Superintendent Patrick McGrath to include parent members on the RTI Redesign Committee!
