Mark DePasquale started this petition to Superintendent of the Saugerties Central School District and

The purpose of this petition is to address our community’s concerns regarding the denial of a basketball season for our students. As I’m sure you can agree, participation in sports offers countless benefits to the students, including but not limited to, mental stimulation, maintaining physical fitness, building friendships, learning the skills to work as a team, networking, and keeping students busy with purpose outside of schoolwork. This year has presented extreme challenges for all students. Covid has asked more from our students and parents alike, creating an unequivocal amount of stress, none to which the likes have been compared before. An open sports season would at least help mitigate some of this stress.

We feel as a community, it is imperative that our children have the opportunity to play again, with all Covid precautions necessary to protect them and the coaches. It has been brought to our attention, that you have denied the children the ability to play this season. We are highly frustrated at this news, as we are aware that other districts surrounding Saugerties are open for sports, offering a modified season to its’ students.   We ask in the very least, that you make a public statement to the community, addressing specifically the reasoning behind your decision not to offer this opportunity to our students. If your decision is related to Covid specifically, please give appropriate reasoning as to why we are closed, and Kingston, and other surrounding districts are open for sports.

As a community we appreciate your time in addressing this matter. We care deeply about the success of our students, and as you are, we are looking out for their best interests.
