Schools closures should not be a last-resort response to COVID-19.  We need to consider preemptively closing schools now.

This we know about COVID-19: The virus spreads through person-to-person contact and by people interacting physically near each other.  The virus can be transmitted by children and adults alike, though children exhibit milder symptoms.  The virus’ ability to kill and cause severe symptoms increases with the age of the infected persons.  Infected persons without symptoms can still spread the virus.

By the time an infected child with only mild symptoms gets checked out by a doctor and even tested, the virus could have been spread: (1) to other students at the school, and (2) to the students’ parents, elderly relatives, immunocompromised relatives, at home.  Thus, by the time a particular school or district decides to ‘close’ a school for ‘deep cleaning’ or indefinitely, the virus has already infected not just students but the larger community beyond the school. 

We should not wait until people are exhibiting symptoms or decide to speak up about ‘possible exposures’ to consider closing or opting out of school attendance.  A public school is a crowded place with random factors we cannot control.  Our testing of this virus is not yet sophisticated enough to prevent someone without symptoms from infecting others in the community.  And at this point in time, we are vaccine-less.

For those who can manage to keep their children at home during this tempestuous time, it will prevent infections through these children.  The challenge is in finding safe and appropriate childcare settings for those who absolutely cannot care for their own children, but the same could be said for any other prolonged emergency situation.  We need cooperation from government agencies to help those who would otherwise starve, lose other vital resources or who are essential emergency and healthcare personnel.  But I do not believe that these factors should prevent what is a rational and effective step taken by other countries. 

This virus is going to cost us bigtime socially and financially.  But we should value our lives and health more than our pocketbooks, our businesses, even our education.  Economies recover, and kids can catch up with their studies.  Human life is sacred.

Los cierres de escuelas no deberían ser una respuesta de último recurso a COVID-19. Tenemos que considerar escuelas de cierre preventivamente ahora.

Este sabemos sobre COVID-19: el virus se extiende por el contacto de persona a persona y por la gente físicamente cerca del uno al otro. El virus puede ser transmitido por niños y adultos igualmente, aunque los niños expongan síntomas milder. La capacidad del virus de matar y causar síntomas severos aumenta con la edad de las personas infectadas. Las personas infectadas sin síntomas todavía pueden extender el virus.

Cuando un niño infectado con síntomas sólo suaves es comprobado por un doctor y hasta probó, el virus podría haber sido extendido: (1) a otros estudiantes en la escuela, (y 2) a los padres de los estudiantes, parientes mayores, immunocompromised parientes, en casa. Para cuando una escuela particular o distrito decide 'cerrar' una escuela para ‘la profundamente limpieza’ o indefinidamente, el virus ha infectado ya no sólo a estudiantes, pero la comunidad más grande más allá de la escuela.

No deberíamos esperar hasta que la gente exponga síntomas o decida hablar sobre ‘las exposiciones posibles' para pensar cerrarse u optar por no asistir a la escuela. Una escuela pública es un lugar atestado con factores arbitrarios que no podemos controlar. Nuestras pruebas de este virus no son todavía sofisticadas bastante para prevenir a alguien sin síntomas de infectar a otros en la comunidad. Y en este punto a tiempo, somos sin la vacuna.

Para aquellos que pueden lograr guardar a sus niños en casa durante este tiempo tempestuoso, esto prevendrá infecciones por estos niños. El desafío está en el descubrimiento de caja fuerte y ajustes de puericultura apropiados para aquellos que absolutamente no pueden sentir cariño por sus propios niños, pero el mismo podría ser dicho para cualquier otra situación de emergencia prolongada. Necesitamos la cooperación de agencias del gobierno para ayudar aquellos que pasaría hambre por otra parte, perder otros recursos vitales o quiénes son la urgencia esencial y el personal de asistencia médica. Pero no creo que estos factores debieran prevenir lo que es un paso racional y eficaz tomado por otros países.

Este virus va a costarnos de alto nivel socialmente y económicamente. Pero deberíamos valorar nuestras vidas y salud más que nuestras carteras, nuestros negocios, hasta nuestra educación. Las economías se recuperan, y los niños pueden alcanzar sus estudios. La vida humana es sagrada.
