Our concerns lie with regards to International Women's Day—tomorrow, March 8th—and we would like to officially cancel school for Montgomery County.
We want to encourage political participation for students, we want to protect those students and who are already planning to miss school tomorrow, and we want to respect the wishes of staff that may want to participate but cannot afford missing a school day.
As you may know, schools in Alexandria and New York, as well around the country and the world, are closing schools in anticipation of staff shortages. The strike is not inherently political or partisan; it is a social movement to show how crucial women really are. We believe that it is important that students are also allowed to be politically active in such matters. It is essential that, as a group who is exempted from other political participation such as voting, youth may have a voice in what is their government. Women all across the nation are asking to use their constitutionally protected right to free speech and refrain from participating in a community that refuses to treat them as what they are: equals.
