Families for Opening RE Schools started this petition to Superintendent Dr. Brockel and River Edge Board of Education

This petition is intended to call upon Superintendent Dr. Brockel and the River Edge Board of Education do the following:

1.    Promptly dissolve the cohorts for Grades 2-6 regardless of the region’s CALI score, reducing the distance between desks to less than 6-feet where needed.

  • Use a “no desk left empty” concept to maximize in person education while we are working to transition below 6 feet.  This would rotate students within a classroom to utilize all desks each day.

2.    By the end of March, present a timeline for the remainder of the 2021 school year that would advance the following:

  • Expand in-person learning to accommodate current virtual learners that may opt for in-person.
  • Work towards restoring full day instruction with in-classroom lunch and use of outdoor areas for staggered recess.

3.    By the end of April, present two plans for how the River Edge School District will deliver 5 days a week of full-time instruction for all students for the 2021-2022 school year.

  • One plan should assume the governor extends the virtual option into the 2021-2022 school year. The other plan should assume the option ends this school year.

School districts throughout the region and state are rapidly changing their models to transition towards more in-person instruction. We wish to stay ahead of this curve. We all understand the inherent uncertainty the future holds and that setbacks may occur. However, this uncertainty should not prevent us from acting and planning now given the information and resources at our disposal.

We wholeheartedly support the teachers and staff during the transition towards more in-person learning and greatly appreciate the commitment and adaptability they have demonstrated during the past year. River Edge is a strong and resilient community ready to lend support in any way we can.
