Those Who Have Been Silenced by SUNY Plattsburgh’s Student Association

Dear All,

Our campus is in remarkable distress. We are in a time where now, more than ever our voices need to be heard and not silenced. The Student Association (SA), those who we have voted in to represent our wants and needs, are ironically the ones who are silencing us.

This petition is NOT an attack on the SA nor is it making a sweeping judgement to paint everyone on the SA as silencer. We are aware that the SA works as a representative democracy.

However, currently, the SA continues to stand by their “Vote Of No Confidence” that was written and sent to: They continue to stand by this document which only represents one fraction of students. Meanwhile, the SA still fails to reveal the exact number of student population it represents. The SA states their “Vote Of No Confidence” speaks to the voices of those who attended the Black Lives Matter March on Friday, February 16th, 2018. As students who attended and helped organize, we want to make one thing extremely clear – we marched for SOLIDARITY not the defamation, devaluing, and decimation of our administration.

As students of SUNY Plattsburgh, we have spoken at both the SA Executive meeting, Monday, February 19th, 2018, as well as the SA Senate meeting, Wednesday, February 21st, 2018. We expressed to the SA that we don’t have trust or confidence in their leadership solely based on the fact that they are turning their backs on the students who do not feel represented.

We want the administration, faculty and staff of SUNY Plattsburgh to know that the SA may be incorrect in these actions, and inadvertently misrepresenting the desires and needs of the students they are charged with representing.

By signing this petition you are standing with what we believe to be a majority of the students on campus who wish for their voices to be heard!

The “Vote Of No Confidence” should not be supported. There needs to be a more representative action plan to present to allow the student body, campus, and community to grow together and prosper.

A suggestion that we put forth is for a poll to be sent to all students of SUNY Plattsburgh (perhaps, Survey Monkey). We can be given a week to respond and from there the SA can determine more accurately what the student body wants.

The students who do not believe we are receiving representation from our student government.
