Refocusing COVID-19 Restrictions at SUNY New Paltz
Why this petition matters
COVID-19 has put a strain on everyone; students especially have been under immense pressure and stress to succeed and prosper in spite of this challenge. SUNY New Paltz has done nothing to relieve or help students with this pressure; in fact they have made it harder for students to grow and learn, not only in the classroom, but socially speaking as well. Recently a fellow student of mine Micheal Basile has been written up with a COVID-19 health violation while helping a student through a mental health crisis. This write up was placed on him three weeks after the incident, and it has strongly influenced his perspective on the school and whether or not he should continue his college career here. The inconsideration for students mental health when dealing with a COVID-19 health violation in the wake of a something like this is disgusting. SUNY New Paltz should be checking in on their students and that is not something that should be up for debate. A large part of the SUNY New Paltz community has expressed that the well-being of students are not being prioritized, and will transfer if things do not change. A meeting is being held soon for Basile, and students would like the opportunity to go to this meeting and speak out on their experiences here. We hope the school will respond to our needs and voices before it is too late to change our minds.
