Emily Liew started this petition to Sunway university and

Patently, the proverbial COVID-19 virus has dismantled the educational system we used to in the physical class, face-to-face meetings, group discussions, laboratory experiments, etc.. The changes are inevitable with the extended Movement Control Order (“MCO”) to 28.4.2020.
With the possibility of the order being prolonged further, we, the students of Sunway University and Sunway College (“the Institutions”) are calling for the appeals as enumerated in the following but not limited to: -
1. The reduction of 40% of all tuition fees (both domestic and international);
2. The waiver of 100% costs incurred but no longer available owing to close-down of the Institutions (e.g. facilities, resources fees);
3. Additional support and allowances for international students and students living on-campus, in light of students living away from home to access basic necessities available to them at home;

4. Additional support for all students, to overcome the difficulties which the students encounter during online and remote learning, including the more lenient evaluation and online counseling and mental health services; and
5. Additional support for the staff, including no staff laid off due to reductions.
Online and remote classes certainly are not the students signed up for in the beginning. Students should not be paying for the “A Class Above” fees for the educational services which are fundamentally different, while the Institutions certainly have not well-prepared themselves, the lecturers and the students in coping with the e-learning process.
Our parents, guardians, and sponsors are currently struggling their best to sustain our tuition fees. In view of this global health and economic crisis, we urge the Institutions to waive the fees as petitioned above and give the support to us, as the students of the Institutions, to show that the Institutions are the protectors of the students.
We anticipate a holistic approach and prompt actions from the Institutions rather than a mere bureaucratic reply. Please do not sidestep our yearnings as the Institutions’ support is much needed right now and to let us feel that the Institutions are with us in this, together.

We regret to inform you that there is one issue with our change.org petition, which is that the log-in does not have any basis of indicating that it is only Sunway students, therefore the signature loses its legitimacy when we get in touch with the higher-ups.

This is for a collective petition where we are invoking our fundamental rights as students and our access to education.

Due to COVID19 and announcement made where the whole of the upcoming semester starting in April will be online. It seems unjustifiable for us to be charged resource fees for no resources.

Furthermore, the value of an online learning experience, as opposed to the physical on-campus experience of learning at Sunway, has been put to a standstill due to social distancing, etc, we as students of this institution seek to move the higher management to remove all resource fee costs from our fee payments and waiver a percentage of the tuition fee.

We will negotiate to the best extent and find a middle ground amicably between the students and the management.

Please do not hesitate to share your student IDs and names for this cause as this is a fundamental right and the management cannot sanction us with any punishment for invoking this right on them by raising this petition.

If you want to be updated on the status of this petition, please post your email on the comments section of this form and we will send a newsletter with the updates we receive from the management of Sunway university or any progress made in this regard.

Thanks and hope you are all keeping safe and healthy indoors.
