David McMahon started this petition to Sunderland city council and

Since 1991 the Wearmouth bridge has been painted in the nondescript, bland shade of green we see today. This petition is to urge Sunderland City Council along with English Heritage to put the question to the good people of Sunderland as to whether we should return to the distinctive and eye catching red and white of the past.

The bridge which was once the biggest single-span bridge in the world was a construction to be proud of, and a feather in the cap for our proud town. However of course time moves on and down the years the Wearmouth has lost all of that prestige to all, apart from those from the region.

By my estimates the bridge will be due another lick of paint in the near future and this would be a perfect opportunity to restore the red and white colours. Nationally the Tyne bridge is always seen as the iconic bridge in the north east... let us remind people that there is more than one bridge and indeed more than one proud City up here.
