Abolish Sexism in School Dress Codes
Female students are singled out in today's dress code, we lose time in the classroom to be sent to the office for wearing clothes that make us feel comfortable and confident in our bodies. Teachers and staff use the excuse that we are "Distracting male students." Which not only tells female students that our education is not as valuable or important, but also that we need to certain hide parts of our bodies that everyone has. I have many male friends that have never been distracted by something any other student was wearing. This behavior can cause young women to develop mental health problems and eating disorders. Not only is the dress code itself wrong but also how schools staff enforces it is. Most of the time male students will not be dress coded yet most every girl I have spoken to has been at least once. By changing certain aspects of the dress code we can make female students more likely to attend classes, feel comfortable in their learning environment, and help prevent future generations from having self image issues such as body dysphoria and eating disorders. For years we have been trying to fight for equal rights for women and this is just the next step to achieving this goal! Rather than teaching women to hide their bodies we should be teaching males how to respect them.
