Jessie McKinney started this petition to Sumner County Schools Del Phillips, Sumner County Schools

Sumner County Schools has decided that students and staff do not have to wear facial coverings (masks) this upcoming 2021-2022 school year. Making such a blanket policy during a time of rapidly rising Covid-19 cases in our county is alarming and shortsighted. We are imploring Sumner County Schools to commit to following CDC guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools which includes masks being worn indoors by all individuals (age 2 and older) who are not fully vaccinated. (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/k-12-guidance.html

At the time of this writing, the CDC ranks Sumner County as having high levels of community transmission of Covid-19, and Covid-19 cases are up 82%, hospitalizations are up 46%, and the average positive percentage of tests is 14% in the last 7 days in our county. Plus, less than 40% of eligible citizens aged 12 and up are fully vaccinated. The virus continues to mutate, and we are now dealing with the Delta and Delta PLUS variants, which are more easily transmissible, infectious, and resistant to treatment than before.

The signatures on this petition are individuals advocating for the health and safety of all students in our schools, remembering that many are unable to be vaccinated at this time. Our school district must take the politics out of this decision, and rely on the guidance of the CDC for how best to keep the students at our schools safe.

We implore Sumner County Schools to commit to following CDC Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools for the upcoming 2021-22 school year. Optional masking for those who are unvaccinated is highly irresponsible and even more so given Sumner County's significant community transmission of infections and low vaccination rate. We are still in the midst of a pandemic; it has not ended yet. Please reconsider the district's stance on masking, and commit to doing what is in the best interests of our children.
