Jessica Valentino started this petition to Summit NJ Residents

Together, as a community, we have to opportunity to take a stand and not allow any retail locations to open in our beloved city of Summit that would sell puppy mill puppies.

The horrific reality is that dogs who are being sold in a retail location come from puppy mills and to that end, we support the proposed ordinance banning the retail sale of dogs and cats in current and future pet shops in Summit.

By not allowing retail locations that sell puppies, we can help put an end to puppy mills.

The following guidelines are ALLOWED

under the Animal Welfare Act in the United States:

There is no limit to the number of dogs on premises.

A puppy mill can have hundreds or thousands of dogs.

There is no requirement on the number of staff that must care for the dogs.

Dogs may be kept in stacked, wire bottom cages, 24 hours a day, confined their whole life, only six inches bigger than their bodies, not including their tail.

There is no exercise requirement.

Dogs are forced to live, eat, and sleep in their soiled cages, for their entire breeding life.

Females are bred from their first heat, as young as 6 months old.

 Human Interaction is not required.

Unwanted animals are killed.

By supporting the proposed ordinance banning the retail sale of dogs and cats in current and future pet shops in Summit, NJ is the first step to ending puppy mills and together, we can make a big difference.
