SUHSD Defund School Police

After the pain and public outrage over the unlawful murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Emerald Black and countless other Black men and women who have experienced extreme violence at the hands of police officers, youth across the country have been assembling to organize, demanding that public school districts break their contracts with school police in defense and solidarity with Black students. The actions of youth and students in said school districts have led to the termination of contracts between school districts and police in Minneapolis, MN, Denver, CO, Portland, OR and Richmond, CA. As the largest secondary school district in California, Sweetwater Union High School District MUST follow suit in terminating their contract with police.
Not terminating the contract between SUHSD and police and continuing to police schools creates a toxic school environment that sustains the school-to-prison pipeline that disproportionately affects black children and adolescents, instead of discontinuing it. By getting rid of SRO's and police officers on school campuses, funds can be reallocated to support school-based social workers, psychologists, counselors, restorative justice practitioners, mental and behavioral health professionals and other enrichment opportunities for students in our district, as the budget supports to meet the needs of students. This allows for the promotion of stronger and richer connections between students, educators and their schools.
Whether you're a student, alumni, teacher, parent or other community member, please let your voice be heard and sign this petition to make sure the SUHSD is truly valuing it's students and not it's SRO's.
Defund the police and fund our future.
