Sugar Tax on Sugary Drinks

Adult obesity rates are highest in the United States, Mexico, and New Zealand. New Zealand has the third highest childhood obesity rates in the world. 34% of our children are overweight. Obesity costs New Zealand's health system $600 million a each year, this needs to stop. The money saved from the $600, and gained from this tax will go into exercise programmes and funding healthy choices.
Parents and children drinking too many of these soft drinks can lead to strokes, cancer, impaired cognitive development, cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes, raised blood pressure, dyslipidemia, gout and dental cavities.
Sugary drinks are often cheap and appeal to young kids with small allowances or money given by their parents. So by increasing the price, they will hopefully shy away from these drinks that are causing our children many health problems. Looking at Mexico, they have put a tax on sugary drinks, and there has been a reduction of sugary drink intake. There is also long term benefits forecast for the country, so sign this petition and help us provide these benefits for New Zealand.
