Change Suffern High School's Graduation

Due to COVID-19, High School Seniors this year are being stripped of some of the most memorable, stepping stone, moments in their lives. The Suffern High School Class of 2020 is upset with the decision of an "individual graduation". We as a class feel very strongly about holding semi-normal graduation. The seniors have not had a chance to give their opinions on the matter. We call administrators to change this and explore other options such as holding graduation at Boulder Stadium or the Suffern Middle School field or even postponing it until a later date.

The Suffern Central School district is saving $580,000 by having schools closed for the remainder of the 2020 school year. Our estimated closure expenses are $125,000. That is a net profit of $455,000. Let's use our taxpayer dollars wisely and explore other options to give the class of 2020 a memorable graduation while experiencing social distancing. Many of us agree that a graduation ceremony is a memorable experience, but these memories are made alongside the people we share it with. In the chosen graduation process, this shared experience will be lost and we believe that it is not fair to the class who has already lost prom, and other social gatherings. Our voices need to be heard and the school administrators need to consider our opinions. This situation is unprecedented to anything that has happened before, and seniors this year should not have to suffer, unlike any other classes before them or after them. Just as the finish line comes into view, and the excitement builds over getting a cap and gown, planning a grad party, inviting family to come to watch, it seems to be getting ripped away from us.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Suffern Class of 2020
