A differential rate system is being discussed to charge a higher rate to tourism businesses within the Shire of Plantagenet. This means they will have a higher rates bill every year. Tourism brings tourist dollars to our town, employment for local families, and a CBD with healthier, stronger, sustainable shops for all of us. Once applied to one segment of local industry, will it set a precedent for others to follow?
A motion to implement differential rates was put to a meeting of council on 7th November 2017 and voted down. However, there are clear indications that this matter has not been finally dealt with and will continue to be pursued by certain councillors.
